Even though I've seen these figures several times before, it never fails to rouse some emotion in me.

+ Six people own 59% of the entire wealth of the community.

+ The village spends more than US $1.2 trillion on military expenditures, and only US $100 billion on development aid.

+ Having a bed to sleep in, a place to put your clothes, a refigerator and a roof over your head - and you're one of the wealthiest 25% of people on the planet.

Sigh.

It is a very Mad World, isn't it?

Agreed. I've seen these figured but setting them to the pictures and music was really cool. Not to be critical but about that fact on how much this village spends on military and development...is that proportionate to the people on real earth? Like, if we shrunk the people on earth down to 100, if we shrunk spending down by that factor, it would still be in the billions/trillions??? That can't be? I think I've just made myself out to be nerd of the century but that struck me.

It's really powerful to see the statistics displayed in such a manner.

And I was kind of wondering the same thing as Mary. Are the numbers at the end for the miniature 100 person world, or current numbers? I tend to get glossy-eyed when people start talking in large numbers anyway, so maybe that doesn't matter so much as, why in the heck do we spend more on military than development?
