| What specific problem does this project address? Too much trash is being sent to our landfills. |
| What research was done for this project? We wore special gloves and sorted through the six discard stations at our church. We moved materials from the wrong bins into the right bins. This meant that almost everything that had been in the trash bin at first was now put into the recycle or compost bins. We also found that people put things that could not be recycled into the recycle bins by mistake. |
| How was this project decided upon? First we answered a questionairre that put us into the 8th Grade PeaceJam Environment Group. Then we brainstormed about 8 projects that the group thought of. We picked this one because we could do it before and after church and events, so we didn't need separate transportation. |
| How will this project remain ongoing? We did it for four months, and now the people are more educated. We think it should be done each year, though, so people are reminded about what can go where. |
| How is this project going to make a difference? The janitors noticed that the trash bins were emptier and the compost bins were fuller. Also, people who came to events were happy to see us there, and asked us lots of questions about what we were doing. They know if its important enough to us, it should be important to them. We hope they don't feel so silly taking an extra minute when they throw things away in the future. It's better to figure out the best place to put stuff. |
