Walk for Water - Ecolé Meridian Heights School
Equal Access to Water and Other Natural Resources
What specific problem does this project address? Our project was created to bring awareness to students at our school about the importance of water in our survival and also how there are children around the world who cannot go to school because they are so busy gathering water to survive. We also talked about the quality of water in other parts of the world and our own daily water use or abuse.
What research was done for this project? We looked at books that informed us about the use of water around the world and had a representative from UNICEF come in and talk to us about the water issues in Malawi and Rwanda. We also talked a little about the Ryan’s Well organization.
How was this project decided upon? Since I am the UNICEF school coordinator, it is my job to pick a topic each year. I attended a UNICEF volunteer appreciation presentation last year an this project was talked about and it just made sense to me to get the students involved with this issue.
How will this project remain ongoing? We have so many citizenship projects going on in the school each month that we need to move on after a project like this. Yes it does come up in conversation every now and then, but no specific follow up is planned.
How is this project going to make a difference? Students made some very reflective and eye opening comments after the Walk for Water activity that shows that they did learn something about our global water issue. Some students have changed their teeth brushing routine and others have had chats with their parents about water usage at home. Students definitely found carrying the water very difficult and I know that they were happy that they did not have to do it every day. It was a great activity to do as a school because we all worked together as a team and every grade level was able to get something out of the activity.
