The SERVERS, not the served
Eliminating Extreme Poverty
What specific problem does this project address? Twenty five percent of those living in extreme poverty are disabled. This project encourages the disabled to be an active part of the solution by addressing some of the immediate needs, but more importantly, serving as ambassadors and living examples of people with disabilities who have become contributing members of society.
What research was done for this project? Every day is ongoing research. The students involved in this project, live with one or more physical or mental disabilities and constantly interact with others who face different challenges. They appreciate and depend on each others abilities in order to function and maximize their potential as a group.
How was this project decided upon? This is one of several ongoing projects that is helping to eliminate extreme poverty and it is important for others to see the self esteem and pride that continues to develop in the young people that participate in this project.
How will this project remain ongoing? Everyone needs to be needed. Our hope is that other groups will form that engage young people with disabilities to give them the same sense of accomplishment that comes from being ABLE to make a difference.
How is this project going to make a difference? By changing the perception of the way the world views the disabled and the way the disabled view themselves, we create opportunities for the disabled to contribute to the solution as SERVERS, not the served.
