Project Goal: The goal of the Green Team is to transform Hoech Middle School into a showcase of sustainability through a number of projects that will be used to educate the community, as well as make the school more energy efficient and practice the basics of seed to table.

Root Cause: Many buildings and communities are not created with sustainability practices in mind. If current generations continue to consume as many resources as they do, this will leave nothing for future generations, which is socially unjust to them. The aim is to transform Hoech to show what sustainability looks like and lead others in making changes.

Project Plan: We began our project by researching what sustainability means and what it would look like at our school. We pinpointed a number of projects that we wanted to tackle and worked on a presentation to Alberici to obtain a grant to fund our projects. Although we did not receive that grant, the school board was able to help us create an organic garden at the school. Our four garden beds will contain organic vegetables and fruits. Our next project is the building of a chicken coop where we will keep hens. The waste from the chickens will be used to create fertilizer for the garden. We also hope to be eventually grow what we will feed the chickens. There eggs can be used in the school. In the future, we hope to add more projects to our list, including composting, a native garden, an educational orchard, a green and white roof, waste water collection, a solar array and a wind turbine. The aim is to keep the projects sustainable, as well, so that they can support each other. (Waste from chickens and gardens used to create compost to feed various gardens, waste water used to water gardens, etc.)
