| What specific problem does this project address? Our school filled up five trash dumpsters every single day adding greatly to the pollution of our planet. |
| What research was done for this project? Students talked to staff, faculty, and other students about whether or not they thought recycling was important and if they would support a recycling program. Everyone said "yes" they just didn't know where to put it or exactly what could be recycled. |
| How was this project decided upon? Students decided that this could have a huge impact on the climate of our school since that is where they spend the majority of their day. |
| How will this project remain ongoing? For one year students collected the recycling every week. This past year the program became self-sustaining with students and teachers taking out recycling from classrooms and building custodians taking care of office and lunchroom recycling. |
| How is this project going to make a difference? Our school now fills up 9 double sized recycling dumpsters every week and has reduced our high school's trash by 70%. This project has spilled over to staff and student home recycling habits as well. This year during locker clean-out there were many recycling bins close at hand to empty all of the paper and office supplies from lockers. Several teachers have even started "gently used" supply cabinets in their classrooms for students to turn in partially used spirals, pens, pencils, binders, etc. that otherwise would have been thrown away. |
