Breaking the Cycle of Violence
What specific problem does this project address? Violence due to individual differences.
What research was done for this project? We are donating to a local shelter in Kansas City because these are the statistics when researching for this project.
There are more than 17,000 homeless in our community. On January 27, 2009, 3,306 individuals were homeless in Kansas City, an increase of almost 50% from January of
2008. Of those surveyed:
66.2% were single adults
59% were male
46.8% have been homeless for 12 months
19.4% were veterans
27.6% reported substance abuse
21.6% reported serious mental illness
7.2% reported a developmental disability
14.9% physical disability
(Point in time data, 1/27/09, The Homeless Services Coalition data, 04/15/09)
How was this project decided upon? Everyone came up with ideas and then joined them together to make one giant project. We found a way to make everyone’s ideas work together.
How will this project remain ongoing? This is a short term project with the hope that we will be able to make the project an annual event. However, we hope that people will learn life long lessons from attending this event.
How is this project going to make a difference? It will help individuals at the shelter and it will encourage people to continue to unite for a good cause.
