Project Goal: The University of Colorado Denver Communication Department and the PeaceJam Foundation have joined forces to offer UCD students the opportunity to participate in a service learning project in Guatemala working with the grass roots Foundation created by Nobel Peace Laureate Rigoberta Menchú Tum.
Root Cause: We are addressing the injustice the indigenous people of Guatemala face each day.
Project Plan: Nobel Cause Service Learning Project combines social justice, citizenship and community leadership curriculum from the UCD Communication Department and PeaceJam Foundation with on-the-ground service experience and training from the Rigoberta Menchú Tum Foundation in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Students will perform at least 25 hours of service per week with the Foundation and its affiliates and participate in a theoretical assessment of the Foundation’s work regarding inclusiveness, meeting indigenous people’s needs and effectiveness of current communication strategies. In addition students will participate in:
• Pre-departure orientation
• In-country orientation & classroom instruction
• Guest Speaker Presentations
• Excursions |
|
• What specific problem does this project address? • What research was done for this project? • How was this project decided upon? • How will this project remain ongoing? • How is this project going to make a difference? |
