| What specific problem does this project address? We will address the use of Styrofoam in Jefferson County School District cafeterias. |
| What research was done for this project? We brainstormed different issues and problems in our community and wrote them down. We came up with ideas such as the economic crisis, pollution, crime, fossil fuels, pollution, waste reduction and many others. We then discussed each issue and the possibilities of how well we could find solutions. It seemed that many of our issues were connected to the environment. |
| How was this project decided upon? We ended up putting our attention on a very tangible issue to us at Foster Elementary, the waste in our cafeteria, and especially the daily use of Styrofoam. The issue was very real to us as we witnessed it everyday. When we calculated the average number of Styrofoam plates Jeffco, Colorado's largest school district, uses per day and the fact that it never, ever leaves our planet, we knew were horrified and we knew we HAD to do something. |
| How will this project remain ongoing? The project will keep going until the district uses no Styrofoam in the cafeterias. The students are highly motivated and the project will continue in the start of the '09-'10 school year. The students will present to the school board their ideas - students and volunteers washing trays instead of using Styrofoam plates to rid the schools of Styrofoam and save the schools money. |
| How is this project going to make a difference? With the successful completion of the project the students will eliminate 9,500,000 Styrofoam plates per year from the school district from ever going to the landfill and never biodegrading. |
