Project Goal: To help raise literacy skills in school district. Root Cause: We have many children in our school district that have poor reading test scores. To help these children gain access to better reading techniques and skills that will help them in their education and their adult lives, our Peace Jam club decided our global call to action would be to help raise their literacy skills. To help children be successful in life they need to be fluent readers and have comprehension of what they have read. Project Plan: The Loy Norrix Peace Jam Club were taught reading techniques and skills were taught by one of our school districts literacy coaches. After many sessions of training, the Peace Jammers, with their training manuals in hand, went to Edison Elementary School for a total of 6 sessions. During these sessions the Peace Jammers were paired up with the entire 4th grade student body at Edison Elementary. The Peace Jammers listened and gave guidance to the 4th graders in their reading efforts. We finished the project we thought, with a book fair of 1,400 books that we collected for the entire school. However, it did not end there . . .as one of the 4th graders told his Peace Jammer that he had never seen the zoo animals that he had read about. His Peace Jammer asked if we could take the kids to the zoo and thorugh a lot of e-mailing and calling 57 of us visited the zoo and had a marvelous afternoon. And that completed this years Literacy Project.
