Project Goal: To provide tools to promote literacy in the country of Haiti.
Root Cause: Students in Haitian schools are unable to bring home textbooks and have no access to lending libraries so that they may check out books for leisure reading.
Project Plan: PeaceJammers at the 2010 Heartland PeaceJam Slam partnered with the Haiti Library Foundation and Li Li Li to learn about education and literacy in Haiti.
They then created five different versions of a book about the life of Rigoberta Menchu Tum, the 1992 Nobel Peace Laureate from Guatemala. They designed the cover art, illustrations, and created puppets to go along with their book.
These books will now be translated into both French and Kreyol. The French books will be given to the Haiti Library Foundation to use as a classroom set and in their school library. The Kreyol books will be given to Li, Li, Li! and will be taken to Haiti to be read to children in tent camps created after the Jan. 12 earthquake. The readers, who are Haitians hired by the organization, will also be given the puppets to make the story more lively and colorful to children who lost much during the earthquake. |
