Kibera Sings
Eliminating Extreme Poverty
What specific problem does this project address? The specific problem is the fact that there are thousands of children living in the slum of Kibera with very little opportunity let alone hopes for the future. More than the solution of throwing money at the problem, these children need the opportunity to give themselves hope and maybe a future in music.
What research was done for this project? Crime rates are high and unemployment is as much of an epidemic as AIDs. Many children leave school young for lives as prostitutes or drug runners. Families and communities are as unstable as the tin-scrap shanty houses they all share. Water is so scarce people often take liquid from the waste drains flowing down the walkways, always containing human waste as well. Yet the children are eager to learn, going to school in all conditions for the chance to soak up knowledge, socialize and get a free full meal. Organizations such as the Fadhili Community bring school to the children, but they are underfunded, and the ever present government officials looking for bribes are proof that the government is not to be relied on for any relief. The children need the tools to bring themselves and their communities hope, and a future out of poverty. The music program is that first step.
How was this project decided upon? Every morning students wake to their lives in shanties, living on under $1 a day, with little hope or opportunity for change, then they walk to school and sing for their miserable town. The people of the slum pa. This brings them a sense of community and hope unparalleled to any other. A music program is just the start to giving the children the ability to make the best of their situation, and possibly even give themselves change.
How will this project remain ongoing? Our first goal; $2500 and the first music program at Olympic Academy high school of Kibera, Kenya should be completed by May, 2010.
We accept check and money donations by mail: 8146 Older Lane, Fenton, MI 48430.
We are working on setting up a paypal account and website.
After our first goal, we will expand into a registered nonprofit working with our affiliates in Kenya and beyond to bring similar music programs to more Kiberan high schools.
We will work with fellow U.S. community members and organizations to help fund raise for our current and future projects. We rely fully on the generosity of others concerned with the effects of poverty for the success of our cause.
How is this project going to make a difference? Giving the children a music program is different than simply sending money or materials. All of the people of Kibera lack money and food, the difference is this program is a tool each individual can use to improve their own lives and those around them. A music program at the school will help keep the children off the street and in a safe environment where they will finally have the chance to express themselves, their creativity, and their cultural heritage.
