Heartland PeaceJam Global Write-a-Thon for Aung San Suu Kyi
Social Justice and Human Rights for All
What specific problem does this project address? Raise awareness of global human rights abuses and political prisoners by oppressive regimes in general; build general global awareness and skills for global advocacy among college students; spur additional action where human rights are not being observed/honored.
What research was done for this project? We looked at a lot of background information on the Laureate, and what others were doing on her behalf, and came across Amnesty's project via a St. Louis advocacy group.
How was this project decided upon? We chose it because Jody Williams, Rigoberta Menchu Tum and Betty Williams have all asked PeaceJammers in our region to get involved in helping to free this great Laureate.
How will this project remain ongoing? We will host an event in Fulton for college students and a community event in St. Louis, and we will continue to partner with those groups on an ongoing basis, as we can.
How is this project going to make a difference? one letter can make a difference, and lots of letters can make even more of a difference. Our letters will be part of a global call to action to free Aung San Suu Kyi.
