Project Goal: PeaceJammers in the Heartland Region will spend the service project portion of the Heartland PeaceJam Youth Conference 2009 with Betty Williams constructing a mock refugee camp on the William Woods University campus. The project will build understanding about the current situation for refugees in Rwanda, including the impact of disease, extreme poverty, and war in this part of Africa on the daily lives of children.
Root Cause: War and genocide in Rwanda beginning in 1994 and continued conflict in DNC and extreme poverty in all of Rwanda have deeply impacted the health and well-being of children.
Project Plan: We will educate conference participants about current issues in Rwandan refugee campus and the local (Callaway County, Missouri) adoption of the village of Kibungo as part of the Humanity for Children/Rwanda Community Parnership activities.
We will build a mock refugee camp which brings to life the daily living situation there, and we will attempt to humanize the disease that is caused or exacerbated by conflict in the region with the assistance of those who have visited Rwanda. We will create "identities" that each visitor to the camp will receive that will include the personal situations of real-life people, including the real-life outcomes these people experienced, up to and including death, when that is the case. This experience will be broadened to the Callaway County community the week following the conference, and we will solicit donations in excange for tours led by college students. The funds will be directed to the Callaway to Kibungo community partnership to continue efforts to build a medical clinic in Kibungo.
We will connect this with Betty Williams work on behalf of women and children refugees. |
