Title: It’s Your Turn: Promoting Racism-Free Schools: (Oliver Kamau & Peace Ambassadors Initiative) Background Information Peace Ambassadors Initiative (PAI) is a youth initiative that uses process drama to identify institutional policies, individual attitudes, and actions that are racist. By offering anti-racism education workshops, PAI’s youth seek to examine the root causes of racism, challenge racism’s hidden motives, and move citizens towards questioning and eventual rejection of racist beliefs, values and actions. CONTENT AND PURPOSE Promoting Racism-Free Schools According to feedback from over 10, 00 youth who have experienced our session over the past five years, racism continues to manifest itself in different ways in our society. In this presentation, participants will get first-hand experience of using role-play, games and dramatization as strategies that could help expose and challenge racist beliefs and actions in our schools. Oliver Kamau is the Coordinator of youth programs in NAARR. He is also a graduate student in the Department of Secondary Education (University of Alberta) in the field of Educational Drama. His research interests include race/ethnic relations, diversity and multiculturalism education, arts-based research and HIV/AIDS education. He is an experienced facilitator and has conducted numerous workshops on anti-racist education. Recently, he developed a teachers’ resource entitled, Race and Respect: An Anti-Racism Resource for Secondary Teachers (2005). |
