| What specific problem does this project address? We have been in the Douglass Community for not too long and have already noticed problems. When one enters the area there is a noticeable odor in the air. The source is the many factories that are in the surrounding area which create rotting-like odor. The garden club is creating a community garden to add better scenery and help clean the air as well to bring the community together. |
| How was this project decided upon? We have decided to complete a community garden that will increase the level of pride in the community, provide a food source, and clean up the area. Most of the students in the PeaceJam group were members of the garden club. People were recruited for PeaceJam from the Garden Club and we thought that the garden project would be a good way to improve the environment and the local community. |
| How will this project remain ongoing? The goal of the garden is to expand its reach throughout the community, creating a foundation for other community projects to grow on. This project will be sustained by the students of Douglass High School. Upper classmen will continue to recruit lower classmen who are passionate about gardening, pass on the responsibilities of tending the garden and advocating gardening throughout the community in the future. |
| How is this project going to make a difference? It will improve, beautify, and teach the community the importance of gardening and how it plays a major role in the development of youth activism. Our garden will provide a substitute food option for the community and an outlet for youth to volunteer through gardening. In turn the community will have locally grown produce and the youth will be kept out of juvenile delinquency. |
