Participants at the 2010 PeaceJam Northeast Youth Conference will have the opportunity to attend one of 15 conference workshops on Sunday, March 27.

One of the workshops, facilitated by Bryan Duarte, will be "That’s So Gay: Confronting Homophobia and Building Safe Spaces."

What can you expect at this workshop?

We’ll explore our thoughts and feelings about the LGBT community and homophobia, while building skills to combat negative language that make these individuals feel unwelcome. We will listen to first-hand accounts where LGBT persons have felt outcast in public settings, actively participate in a discussion, and interact with others in an activity that will teach us how to spread tolerance.

See you at the conference.

That sounds like a great workshop! I hope lots of PeaceJammers attend and post about it on the site so that others can learn from the information that was given. Thanks PJ Northwest for hooking that one up!

I think this sounds like a great workshop. Being thoughtful in our language could do so much to improve this issue.

I think this is an important subject to discuss because too often we don't realize the power of our words or even why we say certain things sometimes. When Wanda Sykes (one of my favorite comedians) joined this campaign I was so happy. Check out how powerful this 30 second video can be. I'm very interested to hear about the results of this great workshop! It's not letting me post the video so just look up Wanda Sykes, That's so gay video.

I love the subject matter. I always cringe when I hear people say that, used to say it myself, all of these derogatory slang words are such ignorant statements. Sadly they have become socially acceptable in many circles of young people, and no thought is given to the effect that these harmful terms have. This will be a great workshop!

Andy I used to say a bunch of things like this too! Without any thought really, because I just grew up in a culture where young people didn't think, they just acted. Then after high school I started to actually think about the terms I was using and say wait a minute, that's not what I mean at all! It took me a while and I still sometimes say things that I know lands the wrong way. So I make an effort to be more present when I speak or just live everyday.

The workshop went well. One of the feedback comments was that "I use the phrase 'no homo' all the time. I'm going to stop that." We talked about this and other words/phrases that are negative and hurt LGBTQ people. I showed the Wanda Sykes video as well as other thinkb4uspeak campaign materials. Visit glsen.org and thinkb4uspeak.com for more info and how you can start a campaign in your school or community!!
