In a Guardian op-ed penned by Shirin Ebadi, the 2003 Nobel Peace Laureate writes that the oppression enforced by the Iranian government is only making the women of the peaceful movement for basic human rights stronger.

Shirin Ebadi, The Guardian wrote:
Shirin Alam Holi, a 28-year-old Kurdish woman, was executed along with four men. In letters from Evin prison, Shirin wrote of being tortured to confess to charges of terrorism. She refused to confess, sealing her fate. At least 25 other men and women await the same fate on death row.

However, as we see time and time again, the harsher the repression, the stronger the movement grows. And as the story of Shirin Alam Holi demonstrates, women are at the forefront of the struggle for human rights in Iran.

In other news, the Agence France-Presse (French press agency) covered Dr. Ebadi comments on the latest round of sanctions on Iran. She supports the most recent sanctions being imposed by the United Nations.

AFP wrote:
"Sanctions are not correct if they harm the population, but those that have been voted recently are related to military issues and people's lives are not restricted by them," Ebadi said of the UN sanctions voted this week against Iran's nuclear programme, in an interview with France 24 television.

So true! You just can't kill the human spirit no matter how much you try.

She is so strong and I am so inspired by her courage and intelligence. We really need to support her right now because the Iranian government is giving her and her family in Iran a very hard time.

I am so proud and inspired by all the amazing women laureates. By their strength and freakin' stamina. I cannot imagine how tired many of then are, yet they do not stop. The amazing thing to me, especially about Shirin, is knowing that they somehow maintain hope. Through all the persecution and mistreatment from her government, directed not just towards to her but also her family, she still remains hopeful about her country and her people.

It is shocking to me that people are still tortured and killed for standing up for their basic rights. I know that Shirin is a source of hope for them and they are incredible examples of courage to us all.
