"Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi has appealed to the international community not to turn a blind eye to human rights violations in Iran." ~ Spero News

They report that Ebadi said concern over Iran's disputed nuclear program should not eclipse the problem of human rights in that country. She also told the conference that political prisoners in Iran "are treated even worse than drug traffickers."

Ebadi also spoke of what she called "a new definition of peace" as "calmness," not merely "the absence of war."

"Although Iran is not involved in a war, people in Iran are still deprived of the blessings of real peace," Ebadi said. "Only a society that has democracy and social justice can attain calmness."

I absolutely agree with her, that only a society with a democracy(huge) and social justice(even huger) can attain calmness. If you have freedom of religion, speech, assembly, the freedom to have your vote count, etc. then you can be happy. If everybody's basic needs are being met, then happiness, or inner calm, can be achieved. I think these are great words of wisdom.

Ebadi also spoke of what she called "a new definition of peace" as "calmness," not merely "the absence of war."

I absolutely love this! I believe there is a direct correlation between inner turmoil and violence. So "calmness" is what we should strive for, not only internally, but internationally as well.

This quote is very relevant to every nation in the world that strives to be for the people. Look at US, do we have social justice? Do we really have democracy here? Everything here feels like someone has bought and paid for it and we have no say in it. :(
