Waynesville Middle School’s PeaceJam club is working to help those in Haiti.
by Kim Gardener

The club, which works to foster peace and bring change to a community through young people, has been fundraising since September to help the Stop Hunger Now organization. Then the earthquake struck Haiti last month, causing massive destruction and leaving the island nation in need of help. Since then, the club’s members decided to direct their donation to Haiti through Stop Hunger Now.

“We committed to 10,000 meals and now we’re close to 13,000 meals,” said PeaceJam advisor Frank Pollifrone.

Each meal costs 25 cents, and on Feb. 20, students and other volunteers will assemble meal packages for Stop Hunger Now. The packages will go directly to Haiti.

“They bring the food stuff and the kids will package it,” Pollifrone said. “So the kids will have a hands-on experience, rather than just raising money for a donation.”

My absolute favorite quote from the article -
“I’m glad to be a part of PeaceJam,” said eighth-grader Ashley Setzer, “and being able to help, knowing we’re not just sitting around.”
