In November, Episcopal Academy’s Middle School Model UN-DC/PeaceJam class delegates participated in the 16th Annual Greater Washington International Affairs Model UN Conference, held at George Washington University, in Washington, DC.

To prepare for this conference, each student took on a role as a delegate to the United Nations from a particular country. Representing Belgium in the Human Rights Council, 7th grader Avi Shah and 8th Grader Misha Melnik researched the rights of indigenous peoples around the world.

In the African Union Committee, 8th grader Jonathon Lewis represented Tanzania as he debated the issue of child labor. Representing the Russian Federation, 7th grader Bobby Frazier deliberated on the instability in Cote D’Ivoire with other members of the Security Council. Bobby earned the Council’s Honorable Mention for his spirited participation.

Taking the role of Meir Amit, Director of Israel’s Mossad, 8th grader Christopher Stein participated in the Historical Crisis Committee of 1967, discussing Israel’s security.

For the second year in a row, Chris earned Outstanding Delegate Honors for his deep understanding of the issues and energetic participation in the highly-charged debate.

Finally, 8th grader Isabella Sanchez and 7th grader Claire Beatty represented Mexico in the Organization of American States Committee, presenting fact-based and creative solutions to guarantee the rights of indigenous women and children.

For their dynamic participation in the conference, Isabella and Claire earned the award of Best Delegates of the Organization of American States.

On reflection, after the conference, the students shared many lessons about peace and negotiations as well as the considerations of compromise, consequences, and creative-thinking. Their teachers were impressed with the global awareness of this class of critical and creative thinkers and peace builders.

So glad to see young children getting involved with global issues in a diplomatic setting, especially in times when many consider diplomacy to be an ineffective tool. Keep proving them wrong!
