PeaceJam South Africa Celebrates Emancipation Day

PeaceJam South Africa helps remember and celebrate Emancipation Day, which stems back to 1 December 1834 when the day was greeted with bonfires and festivities as the enslaved people of the Cape rejoiced in their legal emancipation from bondage.

The theme of the event was "Slavery then and now". Dance, drama, music and poetry formed part of the programme.

It was an initiative of the District Six Museum, PeaceJam, the Prestwich Place Project Committee, the Institute for the Healing of Memories and the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation.
