Each year over 40,000 people gather in Denver for the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Junior "Marade" in honor of the heroic Civil Rights leader. The Marade combines elements of a demonstration march and a celebratory parade to create a unique and powerful event that allows people to get up and get active in keeping the Dream alive.
The Marade begins at 10:00am at the Dr. King memorial in City Park with opening ceremonies which will include musical performances from Denver North High School's choir, welcoming statements from Colorado Governor Bill Ritter and Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper. The massive crowd takes to the streets at 11:00 and marches 3.5 miles into the heart of Denver. At the end of the Marade route participants are greeted by mass choirs, have the opportunity to hear from several powerful speakers, and celebrate those who have won awards for keeping the spirit of Dr. King alive in Colorado.
This year, PeaceJam Co-Founder and Executive Director Dawn Engle will be delivering the keynote address at the Marade culmination in Denver's Civic Center Park. "This is such an honor," says Dawn Engle. "How incredible to have the opportunity to speak at one of our country's largest celebrations of one of our greatest heroes."
This is the 25th anniversary of the Marade taking place in Denver, and the Marade Planning Committee selected Dawn Engle as the keynote speaker in order to highlight the importance of focusing on passing the torch to the next generation--something that PeaceJam does best!
For those of you in the Denver Area, Rocky Mountain PeaceJam plans to have a contingent marching together in the Marade. Rudy Balles will be gathering PeaceJammers at City Park at 9:45--so watch for our PeaceJam banners and bring your own.
Also, check out the PeaceJam booth at Civic Center Park. We would love to see you!
