PeaceJam Celebrates International Day of Peace on Sept 21 - Official Press Release

"I encourage everyone around the globe to recognize and celebrate International Day of Peace on September 21st. This is a day to honor all of those groups and people who work for peace everyday, all year long. I am a member of the PeaceJam Foundation and we are excited to be supporting Peace In Our Lifetimes' "Global United Parties for Peace" in cities around the world and the United Nation's annual global cease fire. Until everyday is Peace Day, it is important that we do all we can to create a safe and just world -- we owe this to children across the globe." ~ 1976 Nobel Peace Laureate Betty Williams

Peace isn’t always about sit-ins. Sometimes, it’s about celebration.

On September 21, 2009, the PeaceJam Foundation is commemorating International Peace Day by honoring all of the individuals and organizations working hard every day to make the world a more unified, compassionate place.

PeaceJam is an international peace education organization that connects young people with Nobel Peace Laureates. The mission of PeaceJam is to create young leaders committed to positive change in themselves, their communities and the world through the inspiration of 12 Nobel Peace Laureates who share their spirit, knowledge and wisdom. PeaceJam has curricular programs for youth of all ages and in 2008 launched the Global Call to Action Campaign, inviting the youth of the world to join together in addressing the most pressing problems facing our planet toady from racism and global disease, to the environment and human rights.

“To commemorate International Peace Day 2009, PeaceJam would like to thank all of our PeaceJam Affiliate and Chapter staff and volunteers around the world for all they do everyday to bring peace to the youth and their communities – as well as all the other organizations and individuals that support peaceful efforts year-round,” said Dr. Kate Cumbo, Director of Programs for the PeaceJam Foundation.

International Peace Day is recognized by people all over the globe. For example, in Colorado, PeaceJam teenagers from Boulder Prep Charter High School will be working at Tom Watson Park in honor of Peace Day. Starting at 9:30 a.m., students will be refurbishing bikes, planting trees and presenting ideas on how to improve their communities.

PeaceJam is also excited to announce their support of the “Global United Party for Peace,” an event being held in celebration of the organization “Peace One Day”. “Party for Peace” will take place on International Peace Day at London venue 'The Bedford.' And for everyone who can’t squeeze an international flight into their schedule….the party will be streamed live on the internet. Many musicians including Steve Balsamo, a British singer/ songwriter and lead vocalist of 'The Story's', will be performing at the party. The event is being organized by the UK non-profit “Peace in Our Lifetime.”

On Peace Day 2009, around the world people will be taking positive action to promote peace, create ceasefires in war zones and organize life-saving activities. Parties and events will take place in Canada, Brazil, USA, South Africa and Jerusalem. These parties have been organized by “Peace In Our Lifetime” in conjunction with a number of key partners, including “PeaceJam.
