On Monday June 7th President Obama spoke at the commencement ceremony of Kalamazoo Central’s class of 2010 as a reward for their winning the Race to the Top Commencement Challenge. In celebration of this historic occasion and in support of the class of 2010 a coalition of local nonprofit organizations including Department of Peace Campaign, Great Lakes PeaceJam, KNOW, Justice and Peace Guild of Kalamazoo College, and Skyridge Church of the Brethren, gathered in a community rally near the graduation site.

The rally focused on congratulating K-Central, the graduating class, and The President on their accomplishments. At least 50 members of the Kalamazoo area community gathered in celebration on a small grassy hill outside of the commencement site, waving signs of thanks and congratulations, playing and dancing to drumming, and cheering at supportive passersby.

Great Lakes PeaceJam would like to thank the other organizations involved in this community rally for their collaboration and participation in this event. Let us give another warm congratulation to Kalamazoo Central for its honor and to the class of 2010 for all of their accomplishments. We wish them the very best and we know we will see great things coming from such a great group of students.
