Way to go Merrimack PeaceJam! These guys are pumping out the projects and this time are focusing on Burma. Check it out:
The Random Acts of Kindness club is once again setting the standard for global awareness at Merrimack High School.
This time, Random Acts is planning on throwing a benefit concert called Beats for Burma.
Senior member Hanna Dunn explained how the group came up with the idea after attending a conference:
"We went to PeaceJam, and we learned about a guest speaker from Burma who intended to come speak about the military regime there. Unfortunately, she couldn't make it, because she is under house arrest by the military government. So, a different guest speaker came and gave speeches about the government of Burma and told stories about terrible things done to protestors and other civilians.
"After we listened to the speech, we got a pamphlet about this school named the School for Shan State Nationalities Youth. It's a school that trains people ages 16-30 to become activists in order to put pressure on the regime and to support causes against it.
"So, we decided to have a benefit concert to raise donations for the school."
Junior Annie Steeves explained more about the project:
"It's part of our Global Call to Action project for PeaceJam. . . . Each group has a project, and the PeaceJam conference in September was about presenting these projects. A lot of these projects have effects on important issues around the world."
Senior Bradley Conway explained details about the concert:
"Our concert will hopefully be happening on March 27th. We were hoping to have it out on the football field, but that may change, and it is going to be for high school students only.
"Hopefully, Math The Band will be performing. If we do have the concert on the 27th, Kenny Gray's band, R.A.R.E., will also be playing."
