Lights Out Campaign Approaching Again

Project: Lights Out Canada!
With Earth Day fast approaching we are reminded of the success of last years' program.
Results:

Our results were great! Some Highlights:

Entwistle reports that the one hour of lights out they measured saved their school 4.2 kwt..

High Park will be turning off the electricity at the breakers wherever possible and returning to a hand held bell to signal the classes. We'll be taking a meter reading to gauge the differences in electricity use for the same period the day before and after.

Parkland Village – the whole school got really involved with a whole school assembly, a song and posters. They sent us a PowerPoint with wonderful pictures of the results.

Spruce Grove Composite High-student teachers – Alex, Carmen, Rebecca, Jessie, Lori, Dale, Kayla and Angela. – Ms. McAllister The Friday prior to Earth Day we sent out an email to all teachers informing them of when we could be holding the Lights Out Hour and letting them know that we would be coming around to speak to classes on Monday morning to raise awareness. During this class to class circulation students were informed of the project, given the ecoactionteams website so they could check their own impact on the environment as well as given some other ways they could help on Earth Day at home or in the school. Some posters were put up around the school, though not too many as to avoid wasting paper, and the event was listed in the daily announcements leading up to Earth Day.

Our Lights Out Hour was planned to happen from 8:45-9:45am but we did run into some complications. The student teachers weren't aware until the day before that the assembly to help the students start their class registration was that morning. We couldn't make an announcement to signal the start of the hour, but I am happy to say that many of the teachers remembered anyway. Some couldn't participate during that one hour, so some took the initiative and turned the lights off for as much as they could the rest of the day.

I had asked that each teacher send me in an estimate of how many lights were turned off in their classroom. …the count as of now is 300 lights were turned off for AT LEAST an hour on Wednesday, many of the classes turned them off for longer. I do believe that more lights were turned off…
