Participants at the 2010 PeaceJam Northeast Youth Conference will have the opportunity to attend one of 15 conference workshops on Sunday, March 27.

One of the workshops, facilitated by Meliha Mehmedovic, will be "Destructive Social Media: The Rise of Internet Bullying and What You Can Do to Stop It."

What can you expect at this workshop?

Facebook, Myspace, Twitter… we all use social media. More often than not, it impacts people in positive ways. Sometimes social media becomes a new avenue for bullying, making it easier to spread gossip and negatively affect people’s lives. Learn what you can do to make sure that social media is used as a force for good and not as a playground for bullies.

See you at the conference.

This sounds like an awesome workshop. I mostly hear about how social media is used for good so It would be really interesting to learn about how it's used to harm and how to prevent it.

This is a great idea for a workshop. Cyber-bullying has been an issue for a long time. When I was in college, a young boy in a neighboring town committed suicide following prolonged bullying and cyber-bullying. It's a terrible way people victimize each other...here's a link for more info

I would be really interested in the psychology behind this issue--it seems to be so easy to "turn off" cyber bullying, but obviously it is something that the bully and the person being bullied get really wrapped up in. Does anyone have articles or insights on why cyber bullying "works"? (I hate to say it works, but wasn't sure of what else to call it--why it is effective, maybe, or what the cycle is?)

This is such an important issue to address, especially for high school aged students. We are on the internet so much and the lack of in-face interaction can also lead to misconceptions and impersonal conversations.
