Abdolfattah Soltani, a human rights lawyer in Iran and co-founder, along with Nobel Laureate Shirin Ebadi, of the Center for Human Rights Defenders in Iran, has received a prison sentence for 13 years. Amongst the charges leveled against him are "co-founding the center, spreading anti-government propaganda, and endangering national security."

However, the conservative Islamic government told Mr. Soltani that if he publicly denouned Shirin and apologized to the Iranian goverment, his prison sentence could be reduced, but Soltani refused.

Unfortunately, Soltani is just one more example of the rampant human rights abuses that people are experiencing in Iran. Any one who is considered a threat to the government can be arrested at any moment, thrown and prison, and denied basic human rights. It is also almost impossible for their friends or family to visit them.

Its ridiculous to hear that co-founding a Center for Human Rights can be used as an excuse to get you in jail

It is absurd! But proud to read that Shirin's friends and colleagues are so loyal to her.
