21 years after receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in honor of her efforts to bring about democratic change to Burma, Aung San Suu Kyi will finally have the chance to deliver her Nobel acceptance speech this June.
Although Suu Kyi was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1991, she was denied the opportunity to attend the awards ceremony. Sensing her and her work as a threat, the government had placed her under house arrest in 1988, and she remained there for the next 15 years. Given these circumstances, her family was forced to accept the prize on her behalf.
However, recent developments in Burma have given Aung San Suu Kyi the ability to leave the country and the confidence that she can return. She was released from house arrest in 2010, and the recent elections in April provided her a seat in Parliament. Now, this trip to Norway will be Aung San Suu Kyi’s first foreign travel since 1988, and she is scheduled to be in Norway from June 15th-18th, giving her speech during a ceremony on the 16th. Her travels will then take her to England so she can visit her beloved Oxford, where she studied and met her late husband.
