The Southeast region is preparing for their upcoming Jam on March 21st/22nd and 6 Oak Park Middle PeaceJammers have been highlighted by the local press:
Six students from the middle school will be joining hundreds of students from across Florida. Lilly Jenkins, the service-learning teacher at Oak Park, said the goal is to bring back ideas to promote peace in schools and the surrounding communities.
"These kids are so excited to go and just take part," she said. "Hopefully, we can have a school assembly and share what they've gone through."
During the coming year, there will be nine Peace Jam locations throughout the country, with dozens of Nobel laureates in attendance.
Rody Thompson, the Southeast Peace Jam director, said about 300 middle- and high-school students are expected to converge on Florida State University on March 21 and 22.
From Lake County alone, there also will be students from Carver Middle School in Leesburg and South Lake High School in Groveland.
Before the students go, they are expected to have coordinated and participated in a public-service project, Thompson said.
Those projects will be presented to Betty Williams, the 1976 Nobel Peace Prize winner who will attend the Tallahassee Peace Jam. See the full story here. |
