Nobel Cause: Peace & Justice in Guatemala A Service Learning Trip May 15- June 5, 2010
The University of Colorado Denver Communication Department and the PeaceJam Foundation have joined forces to offer University of Colorado Denver and Metro students the opportunity to participate in a service learning project in Guatemala working with the grass roots Foundation created by Nobel Peace Laureate Rigoberta Menchú Tum.
PeaceJam is an international organization with its headquarters in Denver Colorado. Its mission is to create young leaders committed to positive change in themselves, their communities, and the world through inspiration from Nobel Peace Laureates; who pass on the spirit, skills and wisdom they embody. PeaceJam connects young people with Nobel Laureates to tackle the toughest issues facing our planet today. The issues range from basic needs, such as access to water, to human rights, social justice and human security.
Señora Rigoberta Menchú Tum used the economic resources from her 1992 Nobel Peace Prize to start her foundation, La Fundación Rigoberta Menchú Tum (Click here to visit her foundation website), which is dedicated to defending human rights, in particular the rights of indigenous people. The foundation is responsible for creating educational programs focused on citizenship and community action to support indigenous communities’ fight for justice and democracy.
Nobel Cause Service Learning Project combines social justice, citizenship and community leadership curriculum from the UCD Communication Department and PeaceJam Foundation with on-the-ground service experience and training from the Rigoberta Menchú Tum Foundation in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Students will perform at least 25 hours of service per week with the Foundation and its affiliates and participate in a theoretical assessment of the Foundation’s work regarding inclusiveness, meeting indigenous people’s needs and effectiveness of current communication strategies. In addition students will participate in: • Pre-departure orientation • In-country orientation & classroom instruction • Guest Speaker Presentations • Excursions
