Most people know Shirin Ebadi as the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Iranian Jurist and Human Rights Activist. But to Pantea Beigi, an Iranian-American who spent her childhood in Tehran, Ebadi is much, much more.

"For someone like me...born into a war, and my first memories of life running away from bombs, understanding for some reason I was supposed to be dead...Then after that, the regime – and their corrupt social structures – telling you as a woman, you shouldn’t exist. [Ebadi] she made me feel like I wasn’t the only one dealing with that," Beigi said. "She made me feel not only was I OK, but I was also powerful...she empowered me to take action just like she did."

As spokeswoman for PeaceJam, Beigi presented at Naropa University on Sept. 2 to help prepare the community for a visit from Shirin Ebadi, scheduled for October 9. Beigi met Ebadi more than four years ago through her work with PeaceJam. Both Beigi's and Ebadi's presentations are being hosted by the University's Peace Studies Department.

"I think all Peace Studies departments in general, not just at Naropa should be about action, not just text books." Beigi said. "Having activists such as Dr. Ebadi at Naropa will instill this belief in the students and provide an incredible example and opportunity for them to learn what peace work really is about."

Beigi's presentation included a brief speech about her own experiences growing up in Iran, followed by a talk regarding Ebadi's professional and personal life. Additionally, the audience screened a portion of the film, "Shirin Ebadi, A Simple Lawyer." Beigi then fielded questions from the audience.

"I feel that it is my duty to promote the cause of democracy and social justice in Iran anytime I am given the opportunity," She said. "I know that sometimes when people can put a face to a struggle it becomes real to them and they can understand the depth of the situation."
