PeaceJam BotThe SERVERS, not the served

Project Created: Thursday, September 01, 2011

Project Leader: Lisa S

Location: Global

Project Goal: Through various service learning projects, the disabled, who have traditionally been recipients of services, become the servers. This ongoing project focuses on the abilities of the disabled to do their part to eliminate severe poverty and lead the way so that others recognize the potential of people with disabilities.

Project Cause: Traditional development procedures do not reach the disabled and 25% of those who live in severe poverty (less than a dollar a day) are disabled. While the Peace Corps helps people around the world gain economic independence, again, less than 5% of their projects help the disabled.

Project Plan: The inclusion goals suggest that the disabled of the developed world organize their family, neighbors, civic groups, and churches to reach out to the disabled in the developing world. We do this at home with the homeless, most of whom are disabled, and we have taken actions to do this effectively around the world through service learning projects and as ambassadors for the disabled community.

Kate CHello Lisa

I am so excited to hear more about the projects you group is doing. They really are role models for other groups and have so much to teach and share. Please keep posting and sharing the details as the projects get underway!

p.s. You all should apply for the Global Call to Action Challenge!

Ryan CThis project is wonderful! It is the true definition of reciprocal service that enables different communities who are normally the "served" to serve. I think all service projects should have a model like this, so there is never just one benefactor and one beneficiary. I cannot wait to see how this project turns out.

Lisa SThanks for your comments. We do have a few more international projects lined up and I will update our page as details start to come in, but this is a group that is ALWAYS active in the community in Panama City and remains open to opportunities for outreach. I would love to see other similar programs around the country and throughout the world. I'm hoping to get some of the students involved in posting comments on this page as well, to also provide opportunities for you to hear directly from them. Thanks so much for your interest in this project!
