The Clothesline Project
Project Created: Monday, May 25, 2009
Project Leader: poonam137
Location: Orlando, Florida
Project Goal: Work on the Clothesline Project
Project Cause: There are various causes and different situations regarding the specific problem regarding violence against women. Many are abuse (both physically/sexually), raped, molested, targeted because of sexual orientation, and even because they are disabled.
Project Plan: Our Peace Jam group has focused on a project called the Clothesline Project (originally started in October of 1990 in Massachusetts by a group of women). Some of you may have not heard of it but it is a project in which t-shirts designed by survivors or loved ones (of only women) are hung on a clothesline. Most of the women that design these shirts are those that have experienced horrible things such as rape, sexual/physical abuse, or any other types of violence targeted to women specifically. These shirts are a way for women to let their anger out in a positive way that raises awareness for others around them. Our target is not only to raise awareness but also to make a difference. The clothesline will be located in the quad (which is in the center of our campus) and therefore will draw attention to it. We will also have many donation boxes scattered around the campus where kids can drop in any amount of money and all the proceeds will go towards helping these women in need. We will d

Great project concept!! I like it because it makes impacts on so many different levels. These type of projects are the ideal GCA project if you ask me. I would really like to learn more about it. |

This is a great project and think it is a great way to draw public attention to such a ignored issue in the U.S. and all over the world. I hope this goes very well and that it helps people to see the largeness of this issue. Good luck and keep us posted on how it goes. -jen

This is indeed a wonderful project, working with the Vagina Monologues and Take Back the Night this past year, we did a clothesline project and it is truly powerful. To see people's personal experiences with violence translated into writing/art/poetry on these shirts definitely has an impact. Let us know how it goes. Best, Camila |
