PeaceJam BotNobel Cause: Peace & Justice in Guatemala

Project Created: Friday, August 06, 2010

Project Leader: UCDGuatemala

Location: Denver/Guatemala, United States

Project Goal: The University of Colorado Denver Communication Department and the PeaceJam Foundation have joined forces to offer UCD students the opportunity to participate in a service learning project in Guatemala working with the grass roots Foundation created by Nobel Peace Laureate Rigoberta Menchú Tum.

Project Cause: We are addressing the injustice the indigenous people of Guatemala face each day.

Project Plan: Nobel Cause Service Learning Project combines social justice, citizenship and community leadership curriculum from the UCD Communication Department and PeaceJam Foundation with on-the-ground service experience and training from the Rigoberta Menchú Tum Foundation in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Students will perform at least 25 hours of service per week with the Foundation and its affiliates and participate in a theoretical assessment of the Foundation’s work regarding inclusiveness, meeting indigenous people’s needs and effectiveness of current communication strategies. In addition students will participate in:
• Pre-departure orientation
• In-country orientation & classroom instruction
• Guest Speaker Presentations
• Excursions

What a charged experience! Yesterday and today we talked with the kids about what their values are, and what those values mean to them. Many values were the same as most American children would note: respect, honesty, kindness. But they also spoke of topics such as solidarity and humility, demonstrating the difference in cultural values. We talked of the importance of listening to one another to truly understand each others worldviews, which is precisely what we were doing by having dicussions about values. Then we played cooperative games, a joyful day!
