PeaceJam BotLiteracy for Haiti

Project Created: Wednesday, March 17, 2010

Project Leader: jmaurer

Location: Fulton, United States

Project Goal: To provide tools to promote literacy in the country of Haiti.

Project Cause: Students in Haitian schools are unable to bring home textbooks and have no access to lending libraries so that they may check out books for leisure reading.

Project Plan: PeaceJammers at the 2010 Heartland PeaceJam Slam partnered with the Haiti Library Foundation and Li Li Li to learn about education and literacy in Haiti.

They then created five different versions of a book about the life of Rigoberta Menchu Tum, the 1992 Nobel Peace Laureate from Guatemala. They designed the cover art, illustrations, and created puppets to go along with their book.

These books will now be translated into both French and Kreyol. The French books will be given to the Haiti Library Foundation to use as a classroom set and in their school library. The Kreyol books will be given to Li, Li, Li! and will be taken to Haiti to be read to children in tent camps created after the Jan. 12 earthquake. The readers, who are Haitians hired by the organization, will also be given the puppets to make the story more lively and colorful to children who lost much during the earthquake.

Kayla PWow, this is awesome! In a way, it is a gift that Haiti was struck by natural disaster. They have received much needed attention and a spotlight has been put on an area that some people didn't even know existed. This project is great because Haiti will continually need aide, which can be provided through this. Sweet!

Jasmin MDefinitely, Kayla. It is terrible that the earthquake happened, but because of it, we've all come to realize how their situation made it that much more devastating. I hope our service project can do something to help them overall.

Shelly PThe project was GREAT!!! The peacejammers did an outstanding job creating 5 books for the children of Haiti. Now all we have to do is make copies and send them to Li, Li, Li and Haiti Library Foundation. Great job Heartland Peacejammers!!

Jasmin MHey everyone! Li, Li, Li! has been continuing their awesome work while we're still assembling books. Read more about how they've been helping earthquake victims on the Heartland PeaceJam blog! Not only do the children get read to, but the readers are all Haitians themselves who have lived through the earthquake and receive a monthly salary.
