Hey everyone,
In preparation for our upcoming Slam, I want to remind you all to be thinking about Haiti and ways that we can show our support and solidarity the Haitian people. I will be posting what I come across here, and I want to urge you all to do the same here. It will really help us make this an awesome Slam!
To start, check out this awesome projectfrom the Northeast region with Life Straws.
The Slam is only 51 days away! Let's get sharing! |

I wonder what would be a good service project that would benefit the quake victims in some sort of long-term way.
for example, the Haiti Library Foundation (on Facebook) has been and continues to work to build literacy/education among the poor and now devastated in Haiti.
How might we help? |

Shelly and I did some brainstorming this morning about workshop ideas. Feel free to add your own, or suggest people who might be able to help facilitate these.
* Student generated presentation on Haiti. We would provide a certain number of information and materials, give them internet access, and they could create whatever kind of presentation they desire, which would then be presented before the service project.
* Haitian Dance
* Find a non-profit organization in the area working on support for Haiti to come in, and even share tips on community organizing and other social justice movement skills.
* Yoga, especially as it relates to peace (and breaking the cycle of violence)
* Haitian literature and poetry, especially as a social justice tool (writing as activism) |

I know Jasmin, Cassie, and I have talked about making books for the service project until we found out that the books would have to be written in French. I did find this video that is about Haitian education. It may be good to show if we still try to do something of that nature for the service project.

I love the video. It gets right at what the Haiti library foundation's work is.
I wonder if our keynote speaker would ALSO do a workshop on literature/poetry, etc.
I know Lily Tinker-Fortell now works for Grass Roots Organizing, and she might be willing to do some kind of workshop on putting knowledge into action.
Alice Bloch is usually able to help with dance--not sure if she knows Haitian dance, though. She might also be able to incorporate movement/yoga. This could also tie in with the GCA theme.
Keep on thinking! |

There is a girl here at the AmeriCorps St. Louis office that teaches yoga. I bet we could get her to volunteer to do a peace and yoga workshop.
We will definitely shoot Alice an email.
I also emailed Valerie about setting up a time to talk over the phone. So whenever I hear back from her, I will see if she'd be interested in doing a workshop. |

We have someone who teaches YOGA here on Campus on Tuesdays. (1) I could attend a class one day and meet them. :-) OR (2) Contact Amanda in Health Services for the name. They might be willing to teach a workshop at PeaceJam. |

Other workshop ideas: ---Haitian Food- students learn about and then make food typical to Haiti to sample
more Haitian food recipies
-- Art workshop - hopefully T. Martin is still willing to pass on notes and a recommended list of supplies to us that we can give to a willing facilitator for this workshop on appreciating Haitian culture.....

If we make a book to send to Haiti, why not make it pictoral then?
Focus: Share our culture, what life is like here, etc. Show we are supporting the Haitians - especially the youth. Create an opportunity for ongoing communication with recipients of the book as Books of Hope does between the USA and Uganda. -Optional: students who know some French could include some text if they choose.
Mediums paint drawing coloring photos
Other option for the homemade-book service project: - in ENGLISH for Americans - 1-2 books to scan as an e-book
Fundraising component: - could make paper copies as fundraiser at students' home campuses. These Heartland PeaceJam could distribute if students send in orders?($5 each?) - include web address for Haiti Library Foundation on back of book.
Focus - raise awareness of culture, people, life before and after the quake, long term needs of the people, ways to help - especially education in schools. - optional fund-raising component as previously specified.
Breakdown of time 15 minute - small groups (5-8 each] planning 30 minutes - create 15 minutes - assemble book
committees - Covers/Binding - one content area/group (can build on the work of the Haitian Research Workshop) |

(This would act as our educational component to the service-project introduction.)
