PeaceJam BotKibera Sings

Project Created: Sunday, March 14, 2010

Project Leader: Kirah R

Location: Global

Project Goal: Our goal is to bring a music education program to the children of Olympic Academy in Kibera, Kenya. Doing so would bring community, hope and opportunity to children living in conditions of extreme poverty.

Project Cause: Kibera, Kenya is one of the world's largest slums; people there live in shacks on less than $1 a day. The children suffer the most from these conditions. Fortunately, volunteers are working to bring the children who are eager to learn a decent education and future opportunities, but the schools lack any music programs.

Project Plan: Our first goal is to raise enough funds, $2,500, for the volunteer, David Jagusch, to purchase local instruments and materials from the community of Kibera, thus helping the local economy. These funds and efforts will bring the Olympic Academy high school a music program with the help of the volunteers of the Fadhili Community (a local Kenyan nonprofit).
From there, we ask for the help of our local affiliates to spread these programs and therefore, the ability of music education to create a sense of community and hope among the poorest of populations, including other schools of the Kibera slum and possibly beyond.

Shelly PI really love this project! Music is such a powerful tool. Not only does it bring a community together, give hope and education, but it is also a wonderful therapeutic activity.
