PeaceJam BotHats On For Peace - Fighting Racism

Project Created: Sunday, February 14, 2010

Project Leader: Marianne R

Location: Stony Plain, Canada

Project Goal: We are going to examine racism and learn more about how we can lead a more peaceful and welcoming lives.

Project Cause: Racism exists because we do not take the time to get to know people of other cultures. It also exists when be think of others in terms of problems that exist rather than individuals.

Project Plan: High Park School - We plan to raise awareness of what constitutes racism, how it affects individuals and how we can reduce it - by standing up to those who speak and act in racist ways.
We will host a day where we research these ideas.
We will invite all our students and staff to show their willingness to change by wearing a hat. This will be a fundraiser to support our leadership training.
We will invite Oliver Kamau of the Alberta Alliance on Race Relations to work with our Middle School students. Through drama he will demonstrate the root causes of racism and a more peaceful way we can relate to one another.
