PeaceJam BotFree Burma

Project Created: Sunday, July 05, 2009

Project Leader: kc4l2217

Location: Providence, United States

Project Goal: Many people are aware of the ongoing atrocities being committed by the military regime in Burma. Our goal is to raise awareness about the ever worsening plight of the Burmese people, including Nobel Laureate and founding member of PeaceJam, Aung San Suu Kyi.

Project Cause: There are many reasons that Burma is now lingering on the urge of "failed state" status. The root cause, however, is greed and the desire for power. Than Shwe and the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) have been deliberately stripping the Burmese people of nearly all of their human rights, all because of their strive for power and money.

Project Plan: Our main goal is to raise awareness to our school and local communities. We have held a number of presentations including powerpoints and movie screenings. We were also lucky enough to have Dr. Ma Thida, a former political prisoner and Aung San Suu Kyi's close political partner, come discuss her time spent in Insein Prison in Rangoon, Burma. In the fall of 2010 we are going to be holding a 'Camp Burma' event where students, teachers and community members will be invited to experience what it might be like to live in a refugee camp on the Thai-Burma border that is home to so many people.

Brett Eway to go, cause no one will do anything if they don't know what the problem is!

Barry FYour devotion to the cause of Aung San Suu Kyi and the Burmese people is really strong... thanks for the workshop at the Youth Conference, for your awareness campaign, and all the signatures on the petition. It takes a lot of work to keep the light shining on this incredibly unjust military junta, and you're doing a great job!

I also want to let you know that you really turned on another PeaceJam Northeast group - the students at Eagle Hill School, who have also been taking action.

Jasmin MWhat a great project. We built a mock refugee camp a few months back here in Missouri, and it was such a powerful experience for everyone involved. I look forward to hearing more about this.
