Amber SI have heard some awesome stories about people writing letters to demand the release of Aung San Suu Kyi. I know Cate Avery, the PeaceJam VISTA in the Northeast, worked with a group of seventh graders to write some amazing letters they sent off.

Has anyone else been writing letters and have a story about this they want to share?

If anyone runs across news stories on this topic or other ways to take action this would be a great place to share those, too!

Bradlee AI'm inspired by the fact that Nelson Mandela and Adolfo Pérez Esquivel are both free today because of letter writing campaigns. Write some letters, please!

Amber SBrad - You stole my line - but it is a good one ;)

Also I thought some of you might be interested in reading this article about how Burma ranks 126th (out of 144) in the Newly Released Global Peace Index: http://www.mizzima.com/news/world/2236-burma-ranks-126th-in-global-peace-index.html

Amber SHere is an article from today (June 2nd) about how they may allow a few more defense witnesses in Aung San Suu Kyi's trial -so far I think she has gotten 1 defense witness and the prosecution has been allowed to call 14!

Dear Bradlee,

Thank you for contacting me about the current situation in Burma. I
appreciate hearing from you on this issue because it enables me to better represent the beliefs and values of our district.

H.Con.Res. 317 urges the President to condemn an undemocratic
referendum process and the flawed constitution of Burma. The alleged
abuses in Burma are deplorable. Thank you for informing me of all the
pertinent issues which give focus to the differing viewpoints on
handling the situation. Burma deserves a strong and democratic
constitution. Several resolutions are working their way through the
House on this issue. I will keep your views in mind as these matters
come to the floor of the House for a vote.

Once again thanks for writing. I encourage you to continue to contactme about issues that are important to you. Please visit our website www.perlmutter.house.gov where you can also sign up for my electronic newsletter and receive periodic updates on my activities as your
Representative in Washington.

Sincerely,
Ed Perlmutter
Member of Congress

Amber SThe latest news is that Aung San Suu Kyi's trial has been delayed until June 12 - when lawyers will present closing arguments. Learn more by visiting PeaceJam's Newsblog.

I also wanted to share another way to take action brought to my attention by the wonderful Alan Calvert of PeaceJam Northwest. "64 for Suu"is a website where you can leave a message of support for Aung Saan Suu Kyi and other political prisoners in Burma. The site aims to collect thousands of messages by Daw Suu's birthday on June 19th, 2009.

As PeaceJam co-founder Dawn Engle wrote on this site on June 1st: "PeaceJam is most definitely supporting this '64 for Suu' movement... we discussed this campaign with the Representatives of all 12 Nobel Peace Prize Laureates who make up the PeaceJam Board last Friday, at our annual PeaceJam Board Meeting in New York City, and everyone was 100% in favor. SO, please check it out, and write your 64 words of support for Aung San Suu Kyi, and then get the word out to your friends any way that you can!"

Cate AI just told my middle schoolers about 64 for Suu and they were very excited. My middle schoolers really did have awesome letters- the best I've read, actually. :)
