Project Created: Tuesday, February 16, 2010

Project Leader: Thanh Thao P

Location: Memphis, United States of America

Project Goal: Our service goals are to establish close-knit community through gardening, and to beautify and improve the environment for generations to come. Our learning goal is to learn the importance and inspiration one project can give to a group of people with the common desire to improve and advance their community.

Project Cause: Factories are emitting hazardous gases into the air. Also the lack of community involvement left several vacant lots in the Douglass Community which we want to beautify by planting a garden.

Project Plan: Our plans are to build a raise bed garden and to meet twice or more times a week. We will begin by raising funds through alumni donations and acquisition of grants from the science department. We will also pull from our resource Mr. Bill who owns a private organic worm farm; he will provide materials such as bricks, mortar, soil, and provide the knowledge to keep a healthy garden. Then we will sketch the blue print for the layout of the garden. We ran into some setbacks in planning because we have contaminates in the soil which contain lead, so we had to plan to create raised beds. The raised beds will allow the garden to grow without being contaminated by the original soil. In addition to this we plan on building an outdoor classroom with a flower bed and walkways, and a compost bin. When the weather warms up we want to plant seeds and create a cover for the seedlings. This will allow the seedling to grow and protect it from any sudden changes in weather. There will also be a center flower garden around the tree which will act as a center piece.

Mary MI love this project first and foremost because it is named after my homegirl, Eleanor Roosevelt! It sounds like a great project though and how cool that you have Mr. Bill to lend his expertise!
