Whhhhat!?! Really, Glenn, really?

Glenn Beck is now urging Christians to leave churches that preach social justice because social justice is "code word" for Nazism. Read the article here:

Dear Glenn Beck,

Jesus is the epitome of social justice.

People only pull the Nazi card when they have nothing intelligent to say.

You're an idiot.

If you are a church-goer and would like to tell Glenn Beck that you disagree with him, you can sign this petition from Bread for the World. you can sign it if you're not a church-goer too.

this makes my teeth hurt. here's by question: do we react or ignore? this man makes his living on creating strong reactions, so by acknowledging his RIDICULOUS comments are we giving him what he wants?

but on the other hand, how do you not react to something that's pure crazy, something that (to quote JOn Stewart) is "hurting america?"

ahhhhhhhhhh. owwwwwwwww. my teeth.

I feel like ignore is the best way to go...but then other people don't ignore (and sometimes listen to him/take action)--maybe being aware of his rhetoric is important, but reacting just fuels the flames?

My mom always said ignore the bullies. Glann Beck = bully with a really big platform.

Problem is, if you don't stand up to the bully, then he wil - most likely - continue to bully.

Rock and a hard place....

Usually I ignore. But I have to say that these antics should be a call for action for social justice churches. I think these churches should be very intentional and loving about the justice work that they do and they should be doing more and more of it. In my opinion, no one should ever leave a church that preaches justice. Social justice is at the core of Christianity. You can't have true Christianity, or Jesus, without it. I have seen some bad stuff come out of super right wing fundamentalist movements and many times the more socially-minded churches stay quite and humble. Glenn Beck is a very squeaky wheel and maybe it's time to stop greasing him? Wow. That sounded awful.

I share your frustrations Betsy, and agree with you all that it is hard to know how to respond to such ridiculous comments that unfortunately only "fuel the fire" in some groups.

In the article Beck say that churchgoers should take a good look at their churches websites and see if there is an emphasis on such nazi/communist terms like "social justice" and "economic justice." If that's a good reason for leaving a church, then there should be a lot of empty pews in any church that actually reads the Bible (hmmm, which I'm pretty sure is most of them!)...the call for justice is EVERYWHERE. Example:

Proverbs 31:8-9. "You must defend those who are helpless and have no hope. Be fair and give justice to the poor and homeless.”
