I think the most stereotypical image of peace is an image I saw as a child of a group of multi ethnic and racial children from different countries holding hands. It is the image of the ride “it’s a small world after all” from Disney’s Magic Kingdom (sorry for the Disney reference but I am a Floridian). Will this image of peace ever be possible? I’m not so sure. That is why I think I need to work on developing a more complex view of what peace can be, and what a future peaceful world can look like. At the moment my idea of peace is a state in which people can work together to achieve common goals that benefit everyone. It is living in a world without violence. Ideally it would be living in a world with relative equality so that no one will have to resort to violence to obtain the necessities of life. I still think this is an incredibly idealistic view of peace, but one that is much more feasible. I really would just love to get the chance to really learn about all that is being done to advance peace in this world. Volunteering with PeaceJam and listening to Nobel Laureates speak about peace will be a great way for me to learn how those on the front lines of the peace movement are working towards securing peace around the world. I hope to gain a better understanding of what peace encompasses. I think people have this one image of a peaceful world, an image that is truly impossible to attain. I want to get a realistic view of what peace means and how it can possibly be attained.
