PeaceJam at Bellevue Middle School
Posted 6/10/2009 at 9:41 AM by Jaime B
So today was my first day teaching the PeaceJam curriculum at Bellevue Middle School! We have some great kids and everyone had a good time. We talked a lot about violence that they have witnessed in their communities, especially gang violence. We also talked about the real-life consequences of hate and violence. At the end of the program, they have to do a project, and they are thinking about doing a Peace dance. I'm not sure how that will work, any ideas?

Jaime, you might want to check this out: http://www.earthdance.org/

i have heard of it before, and it is a day in which people have dance parties all over the world, kind of like a collective consciousness thing and they focus on a certain theme or issue..very cool, hope this helps!

One thing that has worked well is a 'lock-in', where there is music/dancing/fun but also learning -- seeing a movie on the subject you are trying to address, breaking into small groups to discuss, planning a community service project around that issue together, teambuilding games, etc.

What other ideas do you all have out there, for something like a Peace Dance that has been a success?

I don't know what the peace dance actually should look like. However, I remember at Foster Elementary School, the kids did an awesome peace dance in the dark with glowy peace signs for the Nobel Laureates that visited their school. I have no idea what words or phrase you use to explain it and English being an secondary language to me doesn't help either.Michael would know more since he works with the school.

Hey Jamie
It was great to hear your voice on the phone last week. So how is the Leaders program going at Bellevue? There are a lot of fun activities in the Leaders Curriculum and if you need help brainstorming, etc., I am available :)

Hi Jamie,
Penpa mentioned Foster Elem. I'm the teacher did the glowy things. The kids did it under black lights and they wore all black and had white gloves because they performed the song in sign language. We had a few flourescent painted posters as well. The song was With My Own Two Hands by Ben Harper and Jack Johnson. There are two versions of this song so the slower version is with Jack. Let me know if you want more info or a list of a few peace songs that I know.
Good luck with the dance... sounds like a fun event!
