Hello everyone!
As part of the mentor selection process, I asked all applicants to describe their currrent involvement, so i figured it would only be fair if I did so as well. I will expand a bit on my current service involvement for any FSU mentors who might be interested in these topics and would like to get involved somehow.
As you all know (hopefully), I am the intern for PeaceJam Southeast. I began last year (which was our first year) and if you all have any questions about that please feel free to ask.
I started the Light the Night Walk here at Florida State University my sophmore year. Since then, we have raised over $150,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This year our walk will be held November 19th from 5:30-8:30pm at Langford Green. To find out more about Light the Night at FSU, or to register for our walk, visit our website! There are also chapters nationwide, so if you are reading this outside the Tallahassee area, you can visit the national Light the Night website to find out more and/or register in your area.
I am also a board member of the PRIDE Student Union here at FSU. This is a Student Government position. I am in charge of Educational programs. Our upcoming events include 1) a dialogue with Sir Ian McKellan on October 28th from 5-6:30pm. Co-Sponsored with the School of Theater. Tickets are free and can be picket up at the LGBTQ Student Resource Center; 2) a LGBTQ History Potluck on November 11th @ 7pm, location TBD; 3)Transgender Day of Rememberance- a dialogue to reflect and celebrate transgendered persons who have been victims of hate crimes and to educate the public about Transgendered issues, November 20th, time and location TBD; 4) World AIDS Day Carnival December 1st at the Union Green.
I am also a program assistant at the Florida Law Related Education Association where I am working on my Honors in the Major Thesis in Non-Profit Management. I am developing an NGO management training program for the Central/South American region. My thesis is being presented through the FSU Askew School of Public Administration. My Thesis Director is Dr. Ralph Brower. My committee members include Dr. Neil Crispo (professor, Public Admin) and Dr. Caryn Beck-Dudley (Dean, College of Business). If anyone is interested in Undergraduate Research or Honors in the Major, feel free to contact me!
I am also member of the Service Scholar program at FSU. The program is run through the The Center for Leadership and Civic Education and is an INCREDIBLE program through which you learn all about leadership in community service while receiving a generous scholarship. Only incoming freshmen may apply, as it is a 4-year program, so if you know of anyone who would be a great candidate, let me know!
Lastly, I was chosen to represent FSU as a member of the Homecoming Court. Homecoming week is 25th-31st. Visit the Homecoming website or feel free to ask me about any of the events. I'll be at all of them. GO NOLES!
That's about it! I volunteer with a number of other organizations here and there. If I don't know about a program at FSU, I'll find out for you :)
I look forward to the PeaceJam Slam, and to getting to know some incredible people!!!!
Only Peace,
Jaime |
