Iran Wants to Be Seen as Regional Power - ElBaradei
Posted 11/5/2009 at 3:21 PM by Jaala H
Nobel Peace Laureate and chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency Mohamed ElBaradei has said that he believes there is a unique opportunity from now until the end of the month (when he leaves office) for some progress to be made in improving relations between Iran and the US, France, and Russia around Iran's nuclear production.

The US administration has not dropped its offer to Iran to be a willing partner in dialogue without preconditions (a complete reversal of the policies of the previous administration), but is also not taking the idea of further sanctions off the table. If Iran would like a foothold to be able to begin to truly rehabilitate its image and standing in the world, it would be hugely in its favor to work towards a deal with the three powers, particularly with ElBaradei helping to informally broker such a deal. Let's hope Iran will continue these talks in good faith, and help stabilize an extremely unstable region by acting as a real leader, instead of trying to grab leadership through posturing and, to some extent, promoting the uncertainty of the intentions of their nuclear enrichment program.

Here is a great quote (with a link to the article from the New York Times) about the failure of the policies of the last US administration toward Iran and North Korea from Mr. ElBaradei:

"Thinking that I shouldn't talk to people I disagree with, not understanding that dialogue is the only way to change behaviour, has led us to where we are -- a total mess."
