Challenge Day
Posted 10/6/2009 at 3:09 PM by Vanessa C
I am volunteering at a high school tomorrow with a program called Challange Day. I've never heard of it before and am really excited to get involved. I'm used to working with younger kids, so working with adolescents is pretty exciting. Rody got me into volunteering with Challenge Day and I'm hoping that it will be one more thing to get really involved in.

Brief overview of Challenge Day

Overall goals of the program is to increase personal power and self-esteem, to shift dangerous peer pressure to positive peer support and to eliminate the acceptability of teasing, violence and all forms of oppression. Challenge Day programs are designed to unite the members of the school and community…

I'm hoping to learn a lot here that I can bring back to my own projects with kids I do outside of Tallahassee ?

So do they like challenge people to do new things outside their comfort zone? Like bullies be nice to the kids the bully, and kids who get bullied beating up bullies? =)

I think a few schools around my area have done challenge day.

thats not the same as the day where they assign everyone seats at lunch so that you have to sit with different people is it?

haha no, no one gets beat up, although I bet some of those kids who get teased would love it ;)

we did a lot of 'If you really knew me you would know...' kind of stuff. They talked about their family life and it was a day where they attempted to get to know each other better so then when they returned back to the hallways maybe there would be less conflict among the group knowing that they have more in common than not. It was pretty moving actually, kids crying and telling stories about their home life no kid should ever have to deal with. All in all it was a great day and hope that maybe this will help the school in the end.
