Annual Declaration of Christmas Peace in Finland
Posted 7/26/2010 at 12:31 PM by Cassie D
A RANDOM bit of information to share of a tradition of Peace in Finland:
I found out from some Finnish friends of mine about the annual "Declaration of Christmas Peace" that is declared in Finland's Christmas City, Turku, every year for said country and some parts of the world. More information can be found on it on trusty Wikipedia which also includes what I assume to be an English translation/explanation of what you are hearing and watching on the video. (I've been to the square/church you see in the video!! :))

Hello Cassie
So you have been to Finland - that's cool. Where else have you traveled?

I love the fact that Santa visits each home personally. I'm wondering if that's a better way of doing it than the way we do it in the USA.

I would love to visit Finland and that entire region one day... it is definitely on my to-do list.

Hello everyone! I just found this discussion - sorry to join in so late. But, I live in the town where Christmas Peace is declared. It's a centuries old tradition, and thousands of people defy the freezing degrees and piles of snow and show up on the square every Christmas. I was told as a very small child that once Christmas Peace is declared, any kind of arguing between siblings is strictly forbidden. It's a great way to start celebrating Christmas (we celebrate on Dec 24th).

Anyway, nice to see that our little town's found its way to PeaceJam :)
